In the early (pre-1.0) days, I had the mistaken impression that Rust was just for building browsers at Mozilla. So when I first joined #rust on IRC, I was surprised to find it teeming with smart and friendly people — often with no other connection to Mozilla — working together to use the language and move it forward.
We've managed to keep a similar number of folks after moving from IRC to Matrix (both around 200 people consistently, +/- a few 10's of folks). Rustaceans maintain a number of friendly, high-traffic IRC channels on Mozilla’s IRC network, irc.mozilla.org. The #rust channel is a venue for general discussion about Rust, and a good place to ask for help. You’ll find people willing to answer any questions about Rust, and responses are typically fast. #rust on chat.mozilla.org: users who have a distaste for the closed and proprietary nature of Discord will be happy to learn that Mozilla has chosen Matrix as their IRC replacement and hosts a Rust channel there as well; the link here will have you using the default Element web client, but you can use any Matrix-compatible client to connect.
